If you walked in to any of the three office locations of the Heritage Valley Federal Credit Union the last Friday of each month, you would notice employees were “dressed down” — their attire more casual than typical business wear. For the privilege of wearing jeans for the day, employees make a donation to local charity elected to be the recipient for that quarter. A select committee of HVFCU employees chooses four charities each year based on the charities’ mission and values.

Kochansky, Bell was one of the organizations chosen for the credit union’s “Casual for a Cause” charities in 2012. “We hope this monetary contribution can help in some way as it is a reflection of the employees of Heritage Valley’s desire to help our community and aid those that are changing lives . . .”

Bell executive director Ike Hileman gratefully accepted the $900 donation from HVFCU President Tim Ames.

Travis, along with Jennifer Cruz-Beato and John Thomas III, donned fresh, clean business attire recently for a chance to hone the skills they’ve been learning as participants in Bell’s Vocational Rehabilitation program.

Looking for potential employment opportunities, they attended the 16th annual York County Cooperative Job Fair Wednesday, April 18, 2012 from 12:00 noon – 5:00 p.m., at the York Learning Center on East Seventh Avenue in York.

All three enjoyed the experience of being able to speak with actual company representatives to find out what qualities employers look for in employees. Each participant was able to find at least one place where they wanted to apply and with the assistance of vocational caseworkers Melissa Fair and Mallory Ford, Travis, Jennifer and John each turned in applications at the event.

Ready for Hire: John Thomas III, Jennifer Cruz-Beato, Travis Ilgenfritz

“Overall, it was a good experience for them to get out and practice their social skills and see what job opportunities are available in our local area,” said Fair. “It was also a good opportunity for them to explore the idea of schooling,” she said.

I know people from all walks of life suffer from mental illness, but I was surprised to discover that ethnicity itself may cause many additional challenges for someone.

In the United States, Latinos are the biggest minority group to go untreated for mental illness, often falling between the cracks due to language barriers to competent services and significant cultural social stigma.

Studies have shown that older Hispanic adults and youth are most vulnerable to the emotional stress caused by immigration and integration. Elders are likely to feel their traditional values and beliefs clash with their new surroundings. And Latino youth in particular experience a higher rate of emotional stress brought on by poverty, discrimination, and inequality as well as the pressure to adopt an entirely new culture—all of which highlights the need for a secure support system.

The goal, of course, is to bridge the gap between unmet needs and available services. Although it remains a challenge, programs have been established across the country to provide education and support to Latino citizens.

One such program is Bell Socialization Services’ Sendero program, which was designed specifically for individuals whose primary language is Spanish and is one of the only such programs in the greater York area. Bilingual caseworkers foster essential skill building such as money management, cooking, art, and community awareness through recreational activities in Spanish, and further encourage members to learn and utilize English through group workshops. In visiting the program recently, I sensed service users received a feeling of accomplishment through the variety of activities they experience.

With patience and persistence individuals are certainly learning to make strides on their road to recovery.
