MENTAL RETARDATION SERVICES

 


 

The Mental Retardation Department provides a full spectrum of innovative community-based services that assist individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to maximize the quality of their life.

Recreational Services

Recreational Services offered by Bell provide opportunities for people with mental retardation to experience life to the fullest. Structured activities such as tours, trips and vacations enhance social skills and allow participants to build life-long friendships in real life situations.

The various programs offered through Bell's Recreation Department include:

York Day Program/York Evenings/Dallastown Evening - Structured activities are planned and offered five days and two evenings every week. These programs offer opportunities for participants to develop relationship skills while participating in group and community activities.

Options -- A consumer directed social club, Options members meet monthly to plan their own social calendar of events with minimal assistance from staff. Participating in a variety of activities, they begin to make educated choices regarding social activities.

Supported Recreation -- Working directly with residents of Margaret E. Moul Home, York, Bell provides one-on-one support in various community activities for persons with mental retardation and physical disabilities, 2-3 days each week.

Residential Services

Bell provides structured group home opportunities for individuals needing intensive support and specialized housing accommodations in order to live successfully within the community. In an effort to assist each individual in developing to their fullest potential, staff provide:  support, supervision and training in daily living skills, social skills, personal hygiene and medication administration.

Bell's residential programs are licensed, inspected and monitored by a variety of state and local authorities on a regular basis, and include 14 waiver-funded group homes, each serving two to six individuals.

Community participation through the use of generic services, opportunities to exercise their rights and integration into community activities are essential parts of Bell's residential programs. 

Self Program

Support-Empower-Living Fundamentals
The purpose of the S.E.L.F. Program is to provide services and supports to individuals so that they may live where they wish in the community; to teach skills that will enrich lives; to enable people to have a quality life; to become productive members of the community, and to become as independent as possible.

Family Living

Family Living gives the opportunity for an individual to live with a family, in a real family setting. Both the family and the individual select each other in pursuing this special opportunity.

Bell At The Village

Located on the campus of the Brethren Home in New Oxford, our licensed Adult Training Facility offers a structured Day Program of diverse individualized activities designed to enhance the quality of socialization and daily living skills of intellectually disabled individuals from various living situations.

Open daily from 8am to 3:30pm, the Day Program supports individuals in increasing their independent living skills through a wide choice of physical, musical and social activities. Individuals are provided with the opportunity to experience community events through trips, movies and shopping on a regular basis.

Adult Developmental Training

Bell's Mental Retardation Department offers a structured day training program including needs-based activities recreation in a licensed environment.
