A Beacon of Hope: Will Spencer’s Mental Health Recovery Journey

Will Spencer with Kris Stroup, the Director of Mental Health Services.
Finding purpose and sharing hope—that’s what Will Spencer does best. He recently stopped by the Sharing Your Story Group in our New Beginnings Program. When you hear Will’s story, you always walk away with something you need. It’s his gift. His wisdom, experience, and belief in recovery make him a beacon of light.
Will shared, “I received services at Bell over twenty years ago, and then I started working for Bell.” With supportive caseworkers and his own determination, he carved a new path. “I told myself I wasn’t going back to the hospital unless I was turning the key myself. And now, I am doing that as a Certified Peer Specialist.”
For Will, recovery meant finding his “why.” He committed to getting better for his children. He worked three jobs to keep moving forward. “My life did not change until I committed. But when I did, everything changed for the better,” Will explained.
That commitment led him to Bell’s mission statement: “To provide an environment of support and empowerment where people can improve their quality of living.” Those words became his motivation.
Today, Will continues his passion for recovery with the START program at WellSpan, where he supports others on their journey. “I do this to provide the hope and empowerment someone might need,” he shared.
Will’s advice? Your voice matters. Your story can inspire. Recovery is possible. “People need to hear our stories to understand why there is a need for everything that goes on at Bell, in this building, in these rooms. It’s about recovery and getting better.”
Will, we are grateful to you. Thank you for using your voice to inspire and uplift others. Your story is a beacon, guiding others on their mental health journey.
