“I’m Inspired to Work Here”

When families and individuals arrive at Bell Family Shelter, they often carry a weight of uncertainty. Meeting someone there who has walked a similar path can spark hope—a reminder that others have overcome similar challenges, and they, too, can find their way forward.

Shelter Resident Counselors Gwen Johnson and Grace Kenney, know this firsthand. Their personal journeys through homelessness inspires their work today, giving back by motivating others and helping families regain their independence. Their words and actions bring hope to those facing difficult times.

Gwen shared, “I’m inspired to work here because of my personal experience with homelessness. Serving people in a similar situation is my way of giving back.”

Grace, who has been with the shelter for over seven years, shared, “I love working with people and motivating families, using my own experience to believe that being homeless is not permanent.”

Their lived experience led to a special compassion and dedication that makes a difference every day in the lives of many families every day.
