More than just a Residential Program Supervisor in Bell’s IDDRS* program, Dre Dixon is a husband, a father, and a caregiver at heart. From his first day, he jumped in and knew he had found where he belonged.
The days start with breakfast, morning hugs, and small gestures of love that mean the world to the individuals he supports. One individual, who is not usually sentimental, has started giving Dre hugs after experiencing a loss in his family. “I love that for him—how he can open up,” Dre added. “They make the job worthwhile.”
At the heart of his work is the importance of connection. Whether an individual signs “I love you” or shares a smile while mixing pancake batter, Dre understands how crucial it is to show up, be consistent, and demonstrate care. “They are like my family,” Dre expressed.
His dedication quickly led him from Direct Support Professional to Residential Program Supervisor, finding out about the promotion on his birthday. For Dre, it is about making a difference. “I love the empowerment. I love coming to work. I have my cup of coffee and get right into it.”
Before Bell, Dre worked in warehouses and other fields, never feeling fulfilled. “I had a hard time keeping a job because I got bored, but this is it,” he explained. “This is where I am supposed to be.”
For people who want to enter this field, Dre offers this advice: “Take your time coming in. The work is not hard, but not always easy. You should love what you do and have a true passion and heart for the individuals.”
