A Long Way

Early last month, a York woman called Bell’s Next Door program in a state of desperation. She had just sent her twin children off to college, and her husband of seven years had abandoned her, reducing the household from double to single income at a crucial time. What’s more, her employment had recently ended, and rent payments were coming fast. She needed help, so she came into Next Door’s office and applied for eviction prevention funds. On November 8, she was approved, and the very next day, Case Manager Rashirria Emery received this email from her:

Rashirria Emery, Case Manager at Next Door.

OMG OMG OMG THANK YOU JESUS!!
THANK YOU RASHIRRIA !!!!
THANK YOU NEXT DOOR PROGRAM!!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

Today, the woman is doing much better. She’s got a new job, and she’s been able to keep up with her rent payments thanks to Next Door’s assistance. Rashirria, as a single mother whose own son is going to college, feels the plight of those like the woman and urges others to provide support in any way they can. “I think sometimes, people are so wrapped up in their own lives and consumed by their disparities that they don’t think about other people,” she says. “Just a little bit of help goes a long way; every little thing helps.”

Next Door helps its clients in two ways: case management, which helps connect clients with jobs, housing, childcare services, and other resources, and rental assistance, which provides funds for people at risk of or facing eviction. Your contributions to Next Door provide necessary resources to people like our anonymous client. Without your support, we would not have been able to help her get back on her feet. If you want to make a real difference in someone’s life this holiday season, consider making a donation. Your generosity is always appreciated!
