A Powerful Visit: State Rep. Carol Hill-Evans Returns to Bell

With compassion and attention, Representative Carol Hill-Evans listens to heartfelt stories from members of our Mental Health Services Share Your Story Group.

Last week, Bell had the honor of welcoming State Representative Carol Hill-Evans for a heartfelt and meaningful conversation with individuals in our Mental Health Services programs.

“I used to work for Bell,” Carol shared with the group. “It’s been nine years since I left to take this position. When I walked in today, Lisa at the front desk said, ‘Welcome home,’ and that’s exactly what it feels like.”

What followed was a powerful exchange of stories—of struggle, resilience, and hope. Individuals courageously opened up about their journeys through childhood trauma, substance use, incarceration, and recovery.

One participant shared, “Bell provided me with housing, helped me obtain insurance, and supported me throughout my journey. Today, I’ve been sober for over a year and have my first apartment. The best part of my day is unlocking and locking my own front door.”

Another reflected on the life-changing impact of Oasis House: “At Oasis, I gained work skills, friendships, and a voice. Clubhouse is a place where everyone is equal.”

One voice came full circle: “After leaving college due to my mental health, Bell was a place I came back to. Now I work here. It feels like home.”

Kris, Bell’s Director of Mental Health Services, reminded everyone of the broader mission: “We continue our efforts to break the stigma, raise awareness about what mental illness is—and isn’t—and share what life is like living with it.”

Carol listened with empathy as participants spoke candidly about the barriers they face—finding stable housing, seeking employment after incarceration, and navigating long waitlists for care.

“We must do better,” she said. “Mental health does not discriminate. It affects everyone. That’s why I advocate and work to raise resources for programs like this.”

One veteran in the room asked, “Veterans leave a piece of themselves behind where they served. We need support. What can we do to help?”

Carol’s response was clear: “Keep telling your story. Make sure legislators are sitting with you and listening.”

It was an incredible moment of connection—of courage shared, truths spoken, and a collective commitment to moving forward.

Mental health matters. Your story matters. And we are here to listen.
