October 14 Adopted by Scott Miller

Many thanks to Scott Miller for generously adopting today, October 14! Scott’s grandmother was an orphan who grew up in the Great Depression, and while each generation of his family has done better than the last, that troubled background has always stuck with them. In Scott’s words, “any of us could’ve been Grandma.”

Today, Scott is the Chief of Staff for Mayor Michael Helfrich. Scott’s served in all levels of government—local, state, even federal—but his work ultimately brought him back to his hometown of York. As Chief of Staff, he writes proclamations, manages the city’s social media presence, and processes suggestions, concerns, and complaints from York citizens. According to Scott, one of the most common complaints he receives is homelessness.

“There’s just something deeply troubling, to put it mildly, that people have trouble finding a place to stay,” Scott says. “It’s such a basic need, and people are falling through the holes.”

Scott first got the idea to support Bell when he and Mayor Helfrich were at last year’s York White Rose Run benefitting Bell. He had known of Bell for a long time and, having a personal stake in the issue of homelessness, decided to adopt October 14 this year in honor of his late grandmother’s birthday.

“By all accounts, Bell does a fantastic job in the community, and they fill a very important need,” Scott explains. “If it’s in people’s hearts, then they should consider giving.”

Scott’s been working with Mayor Helfrich for about a year now, and in his spare time, he enjoys watching movies and attending Saint John’s Episcopal Church. He has a mother and father who still live in York, a sister, and a nephew who visits him often.

Adopt-a-Day gifts cover the cost of operating Bell Family Shelter for a full day. If you’d like to join Scott in making sure the Shelter is open to welcome York County families in times of emergency, consider your own gift of support. You can make a one-time gift or set up a recurring monthly donation. Use our donation page to get started right now.
